In the 1920's, Phnom Penh became known as "The Pearl of Asia". While Cambodia was not seen as a major source of trade by France. However, the French (and Europe as a whole) were enthralled with the ruins of Angkor. The French began a restoration project on the temples, discovering many preserved chambers and mass system that is considered to be unsurpassed by any other ancient structure in the world.
Under French rule, Phnom Penh developed a unique style that was crossed between traditional (sampots) and European style.
Pheakdei during this period, however, remained mostly traditional.
It is often said that if you were to take images from 1920 and compare it to some images of current day and you wouldn't notice much of a change. Many areas have changed so little in so many years.
